Owning land in Virginia means more than just mowing your lawn.

That’s why the Virginia Department of Forestry and Virginia Cooperative Extension are hosting the seventh annual Beginning Woodland Owners’ Retreat at the New Kent Forestry Center, from Sept. 19 to 21.

The three-day weekend welcomes land owners from across the state that are looking to learn more about forest management from a beginner’s standpoint. Topics that will be covered include a “Welcome to the Woods” landowner assessment, a breakdown of costs and plans associated with forest management, as well as timber sales and a tour of the Sherwood Forest Plantation.

Attendees will lodge on-site (unless they live close enough to New Kent Forestry Center to commute), for the weekend from Thursday evening (Sept. 19) through noon on Sunday, Sept 21. All meals and activities are provided in the registration cost.

On the final day, be sure to learn tree identification, measurement and evaluation from Ellen Powell of the Virginia Department of Forestry and Jennifer Gagnon of the Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program (VFLEP).

The retreat is a planned event through the VFLEP, a program through Virginia Tech University, in collaboration with several state, federal and private partners that offer professional insight and guidance to landowners throughout the year.

Interested attendees are encouraged to register online or by mail. // New Kent Forestry Center: 11301 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge; Sept. 19-21; $55-$170
