From a resurgence of drive-in movie theaters to a surplus of livestreamed concerts, local businesses are getting creative this summer in an attempt to entertain residents amid the global pandemic. And, as of Friday, July 10, there’s a new outdoor activity to take part in that will keep you amused, and get your heart rate up too: Stand-up paddleboard yoga on the Potomac River, courtesy of waterfront company Boating in DC.
The local company has been bringing outdoor water sport rentals and lessons to Boston and Washington, DC waters since 2009, eventually moving to operate the Key Bridge Boathouse for the National Park Service in 2013. From that specific site, participants can learn to kayak, take a paddleboard ride or join a paddleboard yoga class, the latter of which recently released its new schedule for the summer.
The stand-up paddleboarding lessons, referred to as SUP Yoga, include low-impact muscle toning while floating on the water. Each class is 60 minutes long and is suitable for either experienced paddleboarders or those familiar with yoga. The very first lesson of the summer at Key Bridge Boathouse will be on Wednesday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m., giving you the chance to take in evening views of Georgetown while breaking a sweat too.
Now that Boating in DC has reopened for the season, there are several new health precautions put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. For the rest of the season, all kayak, double kayak and stand-up paddleboard use is by reservation only, with no walk-ins available. In addition, all equipment will be sanitized after every use, staff will wear face masks at all times and new sanitization stations have been added to every dock site.
