Get ready to travel back in time. 1969, a vintage-themed bar concept from the owners of Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, holds its grand opening in Shirlington on Thursday, August 15.
This new space is in Astro Beer Hall‘s basement in the Village at Shirlington, at 4001 Campbell Ave.
With a classic 50-seat bar and diner booths, the interior was designed to bring diners back to the year 1969. Custom art and murals inspired by the ’60s line the walls, and there are plenty of retro mementos, including a dial payphone and an “analog blog” — a poster board behind the bar that guests can write messages on via a vintage IBM typewriter.
Plus, guests can stay entertained with classic bar games. There will be five pool tables, two shuffleboards, and four dartboards. There are plans to implement friendly pool, shuffleboard, and dartboard leagues for tournaments, beginning in the fall and running year-round.
Of course, you can’t forget the food and drinks. For beer-drinkers, 1969 will have 12 tap lines with brews like Miller High Life and Union Jack, plus $5 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon or Narragansett. There are also cocktails like the Harvey Wallbanger, which has Richmond-made Cirrus Vodka, Galliano liqueur, and orange juice. Wine and non-alcoholic options are on the menu as well.
The late-night menu, available for dine-in only from 9 p.m. to last call, features bar-food bites for $5, with offerings like smash burgers and a spicy fried chicken sandwich called the Asteroid, plus desserts from Astro Beer Hall’s menu.
You must be 21 or older to visit 1969. Hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends.
