Joshua Plante, owner of The Fermented Pig in Vienna, has died, according to social media posts from the barbecue-focused business.
“It is with deep sadness that we share that our founder, Joshua Plante, has died. He was a passionate leader, beloved mentor, and a cherished member of the broader Vienna community,” the social media post on Facebook and Instagram said.
“His family expresses their gratitude for your loving thoughts and prayers and request for privacy at this very difficult time.”
The post said The Fermented Pig would be closed until further notice.
Friends and people who know Plante are heartbroken by his death, according to posts on Facebook.
The family-owned business has been selling artisan meats, bacon, sausage, and charcuterie online and at local farmers markets since 2018.
In addition to his Vienna business, Plante was the executive chef at The Fermented Pig at Ovations, located at Wolf Trap. There, he has been providing a farm-to-table buffet menu as well as a picnic box option for concert-goers.
His first brick-and-mortar location is in Oakton at the Settle Down Easy Oakton Tasting Room. He partnered with Settle Down Easy Brewing Co. to offer artisanal fresh salads, local cheeses, charcuterie, and entrées like grass-fed burgers and shrimp and sausage rigatoni at the 4,000-square-foot tasting room.
