Updated January 12, 2023. We all get the urge to enjoy afternoon tea every once in a while, and winter might be the best the time to dive into the calming, warming world of tea. Northern Virginia is home to several tea shops and rooms, offering a variety of flavors and baked goods, like traditional scones and tea cakes, in a way that’s accessible and fun for those of us who didn’t grow up saying “clotted cream” with impeccable pronunciation.
Crest Hill Antiques
The Tea Room at Crest Hill Antiques is inspired by tea shops found in small villages in the English countryside. The quaint tea room serves over 30 varieties of tea, including black, green, white, rooibos, and herbal. It also serves coffee, gourmet cocoa, brewed iced tea, apple cider, and homemade lemonade, and, of course, scones, cakes, cookies, and tea breads. The Tea Room is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Crest Hill Antiques: 6488 Main St., The Plains
Crossroads Tea Company
Tea varieties offered at Crossroads Tea Company include old town spice, rooibos, green, chamomile, peach, dragonwell, and much more. Don’t forget to add a scone: vanilla, cranberry, blueberry, chocolate chip, peaches and cream, and lavender are just a few varieties offered. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Crossroads Tea Company: 10806 Wickersham Ln., Fairfax Station

Elden Street Tea Shop
The Elden Street Tea Shop is both a tea shop, selling multiple varieties of teas to take home with you, and a functioning tea room, with tea party events hosted frequently. Themes of the tea parties vary between traditional, like Mother’s Day afternoon tea, and fun, like Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop, based on the Harry Potter series. The tea shop is open Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Elden Street Tea Shop: 714 Pine St., Herndon
