Follow the well-worn path of ordering great Greek food by starting with dips and moving on to lamb. Our Mom Eugenia is a homey yet special-feeling Mediterranean dining room, where the Greek music and accented waiter help you forget you’re in a strip mall. Of the dips, the slightly briny and creamy taramosalata made with fish roe, potato, olive oil and lemon juice was the table favorite, followed by the fava and a chunky, smoky grilled eggplant. A lamb burger could have used a schmear of tzatziki but still tasted juicy, and its side of fries tasted as rich as if they had spent some time with chicken fat. Moussaka is creamy and nutmeg-y, homey and filling—just as it should be. For all the meaty goodness to be had here, the vegetarian platter arrives with an abundance of greatest veggie hits from the menu, including a melange of baked beets tossed with pistachios and a garlic spread, gigante beans dressed with a tomato-herb sauce and silky, slightly sweet eggplant arranged with raisins, tomatoes and pine nuts. The feta wrapped in pastry, sesame and honey is another meat-free star, and could double as dessert.
