There’s not much better in life than bubbles and baked goods, especially when you can get them at the same time and place. If you are a fan of such indulgences, Beauty Champagne & Sugar is speaking your love language.
Founded in early 2022 by Zena Polin, Beauty Champagne & Sugar occupies a small but delightfully cozy spot in Arlington, at 576 S. 23rd St. The venue is divided into three main sections: a bottle shop with an emphasis on champagne and other sparkling wines, a retail shop with cute and wine-centric goods, and a wine bar/bistro with seating for 20.
“Most goods, including the wines, at Beauty come from small, women-owned businesses that value sustainability,” Polin explains. Fitting, as that description matches Beauty Champagne and Sugar itself.
The concept behind the charming spot was born when Polin sold her two Maryland restaurants just before the pandemic and decided to focus on what she loves: “wine and bringing people together.”
The shop is a labor of love. Polin runs it herself with minimal assistance and curates all the wines and retail items herself. The wine bar features wines by the glass and bottle as well as a bistro menu, complete with desserts. The sweets are a real highlight, all baked by Polin herself in house. From her handmade “Snickers” bars to homestyle snack cakes to decadent caramel and chocolate bars, these treats are unforgettable.
The savory dishes — such as cheese and crackers, popcorn, olives and nuts, and sliders — pair well with wine (especially Champagne). And the vibe of the wine bar is intimate and inviting, a space for luxuriating over a glass of wine and a treat.
As for the retail offerings, shoppers can find gift-worthy items such as wine napkins with funny quotes, pens, aprons, and candles. Additional items are for sale in the bar and bistro area, including vintage Champagne glasses.
The shop is also host to several events, “where people come together to meet new people and make friends,” Polin says. The experiences include wine club gatherings, dinners with wine pairings (cooked by Polin herself), and “sip and cinema” lunches with movies. There are also seasonal events like an upcoming Galentine’s Day party featuring sparkling wine cocktails, cookies, and crafts. Tickets and information for events are available on the shop’s website.
