Where to Find Challah, Sufganiyot, and Other Hanukkah Treats in NoVA

Nibble on these festive pastries and sweets to kick off the eight-day holiday on December 7.

Hanukkah begins on Thursday, and as you celebrate the holiday around NoVA this year, don’t forget to indulge in some decadent sweet treats. These NoVA-area bakeshops offer festive Hanukkah treats that will make a great addition to holiday gatherings.  

Amphora Bakery 

For beautifully decorated holiday cookies, try Amphora Bakery. In its wide assortment of wintry cookie themes, there are options for cookies shaped like the Star of David or decorated with menorahs and dreidels. 294 Sunset Park Dr., Herndon 

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken 

Take home a box of mini Hanukkah doughnuts from this fried chicken and doughnut joint. Each box costs $35 and comes with an assortment of flavors including vanilla glazed, Hanukkah cookie, crème brûlée, and jelly. Hanukkah doughnuts must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. Baked by Yael 

DC-based baker Baked by Yael offers festive pastries that are nut-free and kosher. Go for the Hanukkah-themed cake pops, either à la carte or in a gift box. The company also sells challah bread in plain, raisin, and vegan varieties, black-and-white cookies, babka, and apple cake. In addition to its DC location, bagels and pastries are sold online for delivery and at the Old Town Alexandria Farmers Market (Saturdays, 301 King St., Alexandria). For pickup at the farmers market, order by 5 p.m. the day before the market. 3000 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC 

Firehook Bakery 

Firehook Bakery is offering holiday specials at all of its locations. Try a classic challah loaf, apricot and nut rugelach, and star-shaped Hanukkah Linzer cookies that are dusted with powdered sugar and filled with raspberry preserves. 14701 Flint Lee Rd., Chantilly; 430 S. This kosher bakery has an assortment of sweet treats available for Hanukkah. Try the sufganiyot, a type of jelly donut, with mixed-berry filling, an orange-nut babka, or cupcakes and cookies with Hanukkah-themed decorations. There are even cookies you can color yourself.
