Here’s Where You Can Find Amazing English Pubs Right in Virginia

Wondering where to get bangers and mash this winter? Skip the trip to the UK and head to these local pubs instead.

By Meredith Lindemon December 21, 2022 at 5:01 pm

There’s nothing like a traditional English breakfast and a pint to get you through a dreary winter day. These pubs can ensure an authentic meal, even if you’re across the pond in Virginia.

Hawk & Griffin

This Edwardian-style tavern opened during the pandemic in June 2021. The Vienna pub serves a variety of British pub menu staples (full English breakfast and fish and chips) as well as some newer takes on classics, like the British pancakes (think crepes) and Scottish eggs Benedict. 435 Maple Ave. W., Vienna

Hunter’s Head Tavern

This tavern-style restaurant is housed in a restored 1700s farmhouse. Diners can enjoy a full farm-to-table menu that includes shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, and more. 9048 John S. Mosby Hwy., Upperville

Union Jack Pub & Steakhouse

From fish and chips to burgers with cheeky names, this establishment has plenty of delicious fare. Diners are immersed in the historic atmosphere once they step through the doors of the restored Victorian building in Old Town Winchester. You can also book a bout throwing axes for a slightly less authentic British feeling. 101 N. Loudoun St., Winchester

Penny Lane Pub

This spot is “A taste of Liverpool in Richmond,” says the website. If you find yourself at this pub, we’d recommend the traditional English/Irish mashup of cottage pie or the Beckham and Owen, which is pork sausage roll and beef Cornish pastry with garlic mashed potatoes. 421 E. Franklin St., Richmond

Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant

There’s nothing more British than The Beatles — or perhaps the Queen (RIP) — and at this Beatles-themed pub, with a name to match, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Try the Beatles Breakfast, served Saturday and Sunday during brunch, or the homemade French toast and two eggs any style. 203 22nd St., Virginia Beach
