5 NoVA Bakeries With Mind-Blowing Hot Chocolate Bombs

As winter rages outside, take a trip to these local bakeries and snag a hot chocolate bomb of your own.

Updated January 20, 2022. At a time when everyone is looking for ways to take their cozy game to the next level, it would make sense that hot chocolate bombs have emerged as a popular treat. Starting around the holidays, videos of these tasty spherical treats went viral. All you have to do is drop one in a mug and pour warm water or milk on top to watch the melty marshmallow magic happen.

River-Sea Chocolates in Chantilly specializes in all things cocoa, and they’ve added hot chocolate bombs to their winter menu. Try classic dark chocolate, rum salted caramel, Romeo and Juliet (that would be a white chocolate shell with raspberry and rose inside), s’mores, and Cookies & Cream, among others. $9.99 for one, available in packs of 1, 2, 4, or 6, available for pickup or local delivery

The teacher-turned-baker who runs Del Ray Cookie Company has also gotten into the hot chocolate bomb craze. In February, fans can order the heart-shaped dark cocoa bomb for your special Valentine. Note that the home-based baker recommends a lead time of three to four weeks for orders, so if you want to incorporate her hot chocolate bombs into your winter hibernation plans, order soon. $7

Check out the Facebook page of Three Peas in a Pod Cupcakery for fun videos of her homemade chocolate bombs in action, then order from the Manassas-based baker’s list of flavors, including milk chocolate, peppermint, salted caramel, cookies and cream, pumpkin spice, and more. Two weeks’ notice is needed for orders, which can be submitted via the cupcakery’s Facebook page. $6 each, $22 for 4 and $33 for 6; $68 for 12

Sugarcoated Bakery in Alexandria is also whipping up hot chocolate bombs for the winter season. Standard flavors like milk chocolate are on order, plus s’mores, salted caramel and—for those who want to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the viral sensations—color-changing white chocolate. Drop it in the mug, pour the milk, and watch the hot chocolate turn pink! $6 for milk, dark and white chocolate flavors, $7-$8 for all other flavors, $28 for 4

Sophia’s Sweet Treats and Creations has also created a sensation with her home-based bakery, selling out of her hot chocolate bombs over the holiday season. In addition to classic flavors, her coffee-flavored bombs, as well as kid-friendly options (anyone for a Lucky Charms bomb?), have made her another go-to option for fans of the popular treat.
