Advances in pet care have given our furry family members longer lifespans than ever before. With a little extra attention and care, owners can help ensure that pets better enjoy their golden years.
The American Veterinary Medical Association offers these tips on for caring for mature animals:
- Senior pets often need increased vet visits — twice a year or more — to detect problems before they become serious or life-threatening.
- Mature pets require easily digestible food with anti-aging nutrients such as healthy fats and Omega-3 fatty acids, more protein to combat muscle loss, fewer calories to prevent obesity, fiber for digestion, and joint support supplements.
- Animals’ immune systems can become weaker with age, so they may require increased parasite control.
- Maintaining mobility through age-appropriate exercise is key.
- Stimulating older pets through social interactions can also help keep them mentally active.
