The Washington Capitals just added a new four-legged member to the team. The NHL team announced that forward Nic Dowd and his wife, Paige, will be sponsoring a future service dog through a collaboration between the Capitals and America’s VetDogs.
Judy, the 3-month-old black Labrador retriever, is being sponsored using the proceeds raised through Dowd’s community program, Dowd’s Crowd. Judy was named by the Dowds – representing the nickname given to Nic by his teammates.
“Supporting the community is very important to us, and we’re very grateful to those who have served our country,” said Nic.
The team has already helped sponsor two other service dogs, Captain and Biscuit, through the America’s VetDogs program. Judy will split her time between the DC area and Boston as she works toward becoming a service dog. Once she completes her initial training, the Labrador will return to the America’s VetDogs campus in New York to begin formal training.
“We’re excited to witness ‘Judy’ embark on her journey to becoming a life-changing companion for a deserving veteran,” said Paige. “Having seen the incredible impact America’s VetDogs service dogs have on individuals, we know she’ll provide not only companionship but also vital support for someone with sensory needs.”
The cuddly pup will be recognized at tonight’s Caps game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
