If you have a pet, then chances are high you stare at them frequently and lovingly think about how cute they are. Now, you can let the region enjoy Fido’s good looks too with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s annual photo calendar contest.

Beginning on Monday, June 1, this year’s contest theme is “working from home,” and participants are encouraged to submit photos of their pets “at work,” including those funny pictures of them crawling over your laptop screens and sitting at your makeshift, at-home office desk you created to remotely work during the pandemic.

Registration is open throughout the month of June, and votes can be earned online to win prizes as well as the chance for the ultimate title of Alexandria’s “Animal of the Year.” The contest also includes a set of challenges to participate in, with the first fun challenge kicking off at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 1, the same date the calendar contest begins. In it, the first 15 entrants will receive an extra 50 votes toward the grand prize.

The photo contest serves as a fundraiser for AWLA, and this year the organization has a goal of raising $50,000. Each participant must pay a $30 registration fee, $20 of which is considered a tax-deductible donation to AWLA. More than one pet can be included in each registration, and the contest is not limited to Alexandria residents, as all  pets are welcome.

And what’s maybe the best part of the whole competition? Whether they’re working hard or hardly working, all participating pets are included in AWLA’s 2021 photo calendar, and each pet owner will receive one complimentary copy.
