Does your family crave a much-needed break from your usual TV binging? One local theater has the antidote.
The Alden Theatre, a cultural resource for the citizens of McLean and the DC area that’s a division of the McLean Community Center, just announced a winter series of four events geared towards families.
Produced especially for The Alden, all events are accessible via Zoom, with tickets purchased at least two hours in advance of the performance time. All events include an audience participation component, so parents are invited to watch with their children during the performance.
The series kicks off with the Amazing Max Family Show (Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.) and Magic Workshop (Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.), during which the magician will captivate the audience and get kids excited to learn about magic and how to believe in themselves. Next up is The University of Wonder & Imagination, which will run Feb. 6 and Feb. 8 with shows at 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., noon, 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. (each show has a limited number of tickets available.) The choose-your-own-adventure-style experience centers on the mysterious Professor Bamberg, who will let you choose your subject of study, enter a themed room and solve puzzles and problems, unlocking magic powers as you go.
Next up is Doktor Kaboom! Look Out! Science is Coming!, presented on Feb. 21 and 22 at 4 p.m., during which Doktor Kaboom (picture above) teaches audiences about science in a fun and humorous way. Finally is The Joshua Show on March 13 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., led by Joshua Holden, who has been described by The New York Times as “a modern-day Mr. Rogers with hipster appeal.” Holden will introduce audiences to his friendly cast of characters through puppetry, comedy and live music and teach kids the joy in being themselves.
Tickets for each event cost $15 or $10 (per device) for McLean Community Center members. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit the website or contact Patron Services Manager Evelyn Hill at evelyn.hill@fairfaxcounty.gov or 571-296-8385.
