Fairfax Celebrates National Poetry Month with a Poetry Workshop and Contest

Fairfax is encouraging the community to express themselves this month.

By Micahi Oppong April 14, 2025 at 8:00 am

To celebrate National Poetry Month, explore the intersection between music and spoken word at the Making Your Mixtape: Poetry Writing Workshop on April 19, led by the Fairfax County Poet Laureate Angelique Palmer.

At this free poetry workshop, Palmer will lead the class as you write and perform your own original pieces. Get creative as you take inspiration from different musical genres, including soothing jazz and catchy pop. You can even create your own cover art for your mixtape. Supplies are included, but seating is limited, so you must register to attend.

The event runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the City of Fairfax Regional Library.

ArtsFairfax named Palmer the 2024-2027 Fairfax County Poet Laureate in November of last year. She is a performance poet, a spoken word instructor at Wilkes University Maslow Family Creative Writing Graduate Program, and a kindergarten teacher.

In addition to this event, Fairfax County is encouraging poets and expressive writers, young and old, to participate in the Poetic Musings poetry contest.

Submit your best free verse, sonnet, or rhyme of any theme or topic by May 4 for the chance to win a $50 gift card, a signed certificate, and an invitation to read your poem at the Poetic Musings Celebration at the Burke Center Library on June 27.

You must be 13 years or older and live, work, or study in Fairfax County to participate. Online submission only, no mail or in-person submissions.

Fairfax County will announce the winners in early June, with two teens (13–18) and two adults (19+) from each poetic category selected.
