David Jeck, superintendent for Fauquier County Public Schools, will step down, effective June 30, the school system said.
Jeck, who has led the school system since May 2013, will take on the role of Special Projects Coordinator from July 1 through June 30, 2024.
In the new role, an existing vacancy, Jeck “will oversee the details and design work of the new Taylor Middle School and support the other middle school transitions for the 2023-2024 school year. Additionally, he will communicate and advocate for school safety and security,” the school system said in a news release.
Jeck, during his tenure as superintendent, achieved record-high graduation rates and received the 2018 Region IV Superintendent of the Year award.
“The School Board is extremely grateful for all of his contributions to making Fauquier County Public Schools the amazing school division it is today,” said Fauquier School Board Chair Stephanie Litter-Reber. “Dr. Jeck has been a fierce advocate for all staff and a champion for all kids.”
The school system of more than 11,000 students will accept applications for the superintendent’s position through May 1.
In a email to staffers that Fauquier Now published, Jeck said he was he was leaving the superintendent’s position on good terms.
“On a very personal note, and because I have developed such strong relationships with so many of you, I feel compelled to share a bit more about my circumstances,” Jeck wrote. “The wind was completely knocked out of my sails beginning December of 2021, and I have not been able to get that wind back. I have tried, but I cannot. It makes sense now for someone else to lead this amazing place because that is exactly what you and our students deserve.”
Jeck’s 28-year-old son died in early December 2021. After his son’s death, Jeck filed a $15 million civil lawsuit against Fauquier Hospital and three others, claiming medical negligence.
