Community Foundation Scholarship
Open to graduating high school seniors in Northern Virginia, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s annual program awards around $300,000 each year to more than 90 students. Each scholarship has different selection criteria, allowing opportunities for a diverse range of students. The applications are due by April 2.
Arlington Community Foundation Scholarships
The Arlington Community Foundation offers 70 college scholarships each year, with many different criteria for each, but only one application is required to be considered for all of them. There are academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, community service and leadership scholarships, those for students attending community college and more. Applications must be submitted by Jan. 28, at 5 p.m.
Mary Graham Lasley Scholarship
Supported by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, the Mary Graham Lasley Scholarship is for students who play strings, winds, piano or percussion instruments. Each contestant must perform a significant movement of a concerto, or work of equal difficulty, composed for solo instrument and orchestra accompaniment. Performance time is limited to 15 minutes or less and the composition must be performed by memory. The competition will take place on March 24, and the deadline for applications for the competition is March 8.
Eighteen scholarships are available to Virginia public, private and home school juniors and seniors who submit outstanding and analytical essays on any positive or negative aspect of the career, character or legacy of either General Robert E. Lee or General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Essays for the competition are due on Feb. 1.
Virginia Credit Union Scholarship Program
For students who are members of Virginia Credit Union, this scholarship program awards up to $2,500 per scholarship to 30 students. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and the application includes an essay on this topic: “How have you learned to manage your money and credit responsibly, and what role has Virginia Credit Union played?” The deadline is March 1.
The Virginia High School League and its corporate sponsors offer three scholarships for high school seniors: the Allstate Foundation/VHSL Achievement Award, which awards 19 students who have excelled in the classroom and athletic and academic activities; the Savedge Scholarship Award for students who participated in school publications like the yearbook and newspaper; and the Vito Perriello Citizenship Award, which includes two $1,000 scholarships for two students who showed outstanding traits of citizenship. All three applications are due in March.
