These affordable, family-friendly options won’t break the bank.

Summer activities don’t have to be expensive. These low-cost, budget-friendly events will keep the whole family entertained, from parents to pups.


2026 Public Art Scavenger Hunt

Through August 15

This free, family-friendly scavenger hunt explores public art in Reston. To participate, download a free scavenger hunt card. Wander through Reston to scan QR codes on signs that are placed next to photos of each artwork. Take selfies next to the artwork, then post your photo on Facebook or Instagram, hashtagging #PublicArtReston. Take a picture of your completed scavenger hunt card and then email it to [email protected] for a chance to win prizes. Reston, free

Summer at the Rec

Through August 21, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily

Arlington Mill Community Center is hosting a free, drop-in summer program for teens. The afternoon program has activities for teens incorporating music, sports, cooking, and the arts. There are weekly DJ and music production classes and an e-sports lounge too. The program is free for teens to attend with a teen pass, which is also free. 909 S Dinwiddie St., Arlington, free

Local storytellers read books on Wednesday mornings in Historic Vienna at this free get-together. Toddlers and young children are welcome to gather under the large oak tree by the patio behind the Freeman Store. Afterward, there will be sprinklers on the lawn for kids to run through and cool off. 131 Church St. NE, Vienna, free

Carlyle House Trivia Nights

July 24, August 7, August 21, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Carlyle House Historic Park staffers have created a summer bi-weekly trivia night. There are weekly prizes for the winning team and a grand prize for teams that win the most points throughout the entire summer. Each night has a different theme, and upcoming evenings include topics like mystery literature, musicals, and 1970s music. Register in advance and tickets are $15 per person and include snacks and mocktails. Teams are limited to six people with no outside alcohol permitted. 121 N Fairfax St., Alexandria, $15

Shipgarten Four-Year Anniversary Party

August 8, noon to 11:30 p.m.

Shipgarten is celebrating four years with events for all ages including a hot dog eating contest, a water balloon fight, and live music. There are also plans for a photo booth. More than 40 beer and cider samples will be available from local breweries, and the day is dog friendly too, complete with a dog-themed menu. 7581 Colshire Dr., Tysons, free admission

Museum Family Monday: Farm Day

August 17, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Historic Haislip-Hall House will be open for a family-friendly morning where children can learn 19th century farm activities like churning butter, cranking ice cream, and playing historic games. Children can learn about what farm life was like pre-electricity. Adults must be able to participate alongside kids. 12229 Bristow Rd., Bristow, $5
