Looking for a fun way to escape the never-melting snow and frigid temps. Instead of spending another day stuck inside, take a short trip to Key City Hobby in Frederick, Maryland, to experience its remote-controlled (R/C) rock crawling playground and drift track.
The hobby store and its playground opened in 2021. At first, the 12,000-square-foot space featured only the rock-covered track. As the largest indoor R/C rock crawling playground, the area includes ramps, bridges, tunnels, and waterfalls where you push your car to the limit.

In 2023, Key City Hobby added a drift track, which is the biggest drift track on the east coast, to its playground. Here, racers trade in their trucks for something with a bit more speed as they drive laps around the curving track. For drivers wanting a little more experience before hitting the track, the shop also hosts a once-a-month drift clinic.
Both the rock crawling and drift tracks are open to all ages, as long as you have parental supervision and bring your own vehicle. Those that need to rent a vehicle from the hobby shop need to be at least 6 years old to participate.
Passes for the playground are $20 to $25 per day per track. Guests wanting to try out both rock crawling and drifting can purchase the combo pass for an additional $10. Guests are able to bring their own car or rent one. Rental prices are 30 minutes for $19.99 or one hour for $33.
The playground is open on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. 3914 Cornell Pl., Unit 1, Frederick, Maryland
