March into Spring at These 8 Fairfax County Park Activities

Learn how to build a fire, sketch some dinosaurs, and gather herbal remedies.

Spring is around the corner and the outdoors is calling. Get some fresh air and learn something new at one of these engaging Fairfax County Park Authority activities. We’ve rounded up a sampling of eight March events that cater to a variety of ages and interests.

Savor Some Storytelling

March 1, 11 a.m.

This “Spellbinders — Tales of Tails” activity honors the tradition of oral storytelling from countries around the world. Attendees are welcome to share a five-minute story appropriate for ages 4 and up, and every child receives a free book. Hidden Oaks Nature Center: 7701 Royce St., Annandale, free

Gather Round the Campfire

March 1, 6 p.m.

Bring the family to an evening of outdoor exploration and campfire fun. The March 1 theme is “spring senses,” and events may include nature walks, interactive activities, and animal presentations. Plus, there’s always tasty s’mores to be had. Burke Lake Park: 7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station, ages 4 to adult, $12, registration is required

Bring Your Tot on a Nature Quest

March 3, 11 a.m.

Kids ages 3 to 6 will explore the area and participate in hands-on activities to learn about the many local animal species. Hidden Pond Nature Center: 8511 Greeley Blvd., Springfield, $32, parent must accompany child

Take a Swing at Glow Golf

March 8, 6:30 p.m.

Pack a flashlight or headlamp and try some evening glow golf fun. Tee boxes, flagsticks, and cups will be marked with LED lights on the course, and players will receive three LED golf balls. Beer, seltzers, and pre-mixed cocktails will be available for purchase. Oakmont Golf Center: 3136 Jermantown Rd., Oakton, $45, registration is required

Draw Dino-mite Art

March 16, 1 p.m.

Ages 7 to adult are invited to bring a sketchbook to this creative art-meets-science activity. The group will meet with a naturalist and sketch the dinosaurs that might have roamed the area millions of years ago. Lake Fairfax: 1400 Lake Fairfax Dr., Reston, $12, registration is required

Discover Plant Power

March 23, 10 a.m.

Learn about the healing power of plants as you forage for herbal remedies and wild edibles. You’ll also learn how to gather these plants safely and sustainably. Riverbend Park: 8700 Potomac Hills St., Great Falls, $14, ages 12 to adult, registration is required

Take a Woodcock Walk

March 25, 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Take an evening stroll through the forest to one of Huntley Meadows’ largest meadows. Listen for the call of the male woodcock and hopefully witness his amazing courtship dance and flight. Huntley Meadows: 3701 Lockheed Blvd., Alexandria, $9, registration is required

Get Primitive

March 29, 10 a.m.

Hone your survival skills at this “Primitive Basics” event. Learn the ancient techniques of starting a fire, working on a dugout canoe, and using a bow and arrow. Riverbend Park: 8700 Potomac Hills St., Great Falls, $12, registration is required
