Gather Round for Some Story Time Fun

We’ve rounded up six options to engage young minds in the beauty of books.

By Debbie Williams February 19, 2025 at 8:43 am

Reading really is fundamental. And studies show that reading aloud to kids can boost brain development and provide long-term benefits. Local libraries offer a variety of ongoing story time programming, including Arlington, Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William. And we’ve rounded up some additional options to engage your little ones in some literary fun.

Story Time with Danielle Joseph

February 22, 10:30 a.m.

Danielle Joseph will be reading her picture book, The Mitzvah Fairy — which teaches about Jewish values — and leading the group in a craft. Scrawl Books: 11911 Freedom Dr., Reston, free

Maya Wei-Haas: A Reading and Presentation

March 22, 11 a.m.

Local author and geologist Maya Wei-Haas will hold an interactive reading and presentation of her first nonfiction children’s book, What a Rock Can Reveal. The event is geared toward ages 4 to 10, and includes a chance to see many of the rocks and fossils mentioned in the book. Bards Alley Bookshop: 110 Church St. NW, Vienna, free

Story Time and Meet and Greet with Nicole Metas

April 5, 11 a.m.

Join author Nicole Metas as she reads her book, Hemi Bunny Finds a Mommy. In the story, Hemi learns that families might be formed through different ways — like adoption or fostering — but that love is what matters most. Barnes and Noble: 12193 Fair Lakes Promenade Dr., Fairfax, free

Mae Among the Stars

Tuesdays and Thursdays in February, 11 and 11:30 a.m.

In Mae Among the Stars by Rhoda Ahmed, kids will learn the inspirational story of the first African American woman in space. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center: 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy., Chantilly, free; parking is $15

Story Time at Kinder Haus Toys

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.

Kinder Haus hosts biweekly story times with multiple books read per session. The events are open to all ages, but books typically cater to age 4 and under. Afterward, kids can stick around and enjoy some play time in the store’s interactive play area. Kinder Haus Toys: 1220 N. Fillmore St., Arlington, free

STEAM Story Time

Wednesdays, 2:30 p.m.

Take your tot to explore the Little Dreamers area at the National Children’s Museum, which is specially designed for ages 3 and under. Then gather around for an interactive STEAM-themed story time, which is included in the price of admission. National Children’s Museum: 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC; $18.95 per person; children under 1 are free
