Ring in the New Year with Kid-Friendly Activities in Northern Virginia

You can celebrate the start of 2025 without skipping bedtime.

By Maggie Roth December 26, 2024 at 12:40 pm

New Year’s is a fun occasion for all ages, but staying up until midnight can be tough for little ones — especially when that includes loud fireworks and noisy crowds. This year, bring the kids to a holiday celebration specifically designed with little ones in mind. At these six kid-friendly New Year’s events, there will be apple juice toasts, live performances, midday ball drops, and other fun happenings to ring in 2025 on December 31.

Noon Year’s Eve

8 a.m.

Fauquier County will host a kids New Year’s event starting at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, featuring entertainment, food, games, and a ball drop at 12 p.m. Vint Hill Community Center: 4235 Aiken Dr., Warrenton, free

The Rocknoceros New Year’s Eve Ball

11 a.m., 2 p.m.

Jammin Java will host its annual New Year’s Eve Ball for kids, featuring performances from DMV-area kids band Rocknoceros. There are performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., fit for any ages. The celebrations include an apple juice toast, New Year’s resolutions, and a ball drop. Jammin Java: 227 Maple Ave. E., Vienna, $10

Olde Year’s Day 2024

Noon–4 p.m.

Before the New Year’s festivities begin in earnest, swing by the Torpedo Factory for a family-friendly afternoon of arts, entertainment, and exploration. Kids will love the selection of hands-on arts and crafts activities to create before welcoming 2025. Mingle while enjoying the Torpedo Factory’s artists in residence, who will offer demonstrations on site. Registration is not required for this free event. 105 N. Union St., Alexandria, free

Noon Year’s Eve Party at Shipgarten

Noon–6 p.m.

Sometimes, it’s difficult for the entire family to make it to midnight — why not celebrate at noon instead? This family-friendly party features live magic, a balloon drop, and an appearance from Princess Elsa and Spiderman. Admission includes free face painting, access to bouncy castles, and party favors for those who arrive early. 7581 Colshire Dr., McLean

First Night ALX 2024

2 p.m.

Alexandria’s First Night celebrations kick off at 2 p.m. with performances for the whole family, and there will be a fireworks display at 6 p.m. so little ones don’t have to stay up past their bedtimes. Following the early fireworks, there will be live music on 12 stages throughout Old Town. Matinee passes start around $10, all-access passes start around $15

New Year’s Eve Around the World

Times vary

The Children’s Science Center will have a full day of New Year’s-themed fun in a STEM-focused setting. Kids will get to see the ball drop at “midnight,” toast with sparkling apple cider, and create a 2025 headband. Plus, engineer a New Year’s thaumatrope and play with glittery “celebration slime.” Tickets are included with a timed entry pass to the center. Children’s Science Center: 11948 L Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, $15
