Northern Virginia Family Service will open its Early Childhood Education Center in Ashburn in spring 2025, offering affordable, full-day preschool programs through Head Start and Early Head Start. It will serve more than 70 children and their families.
At the heart of this new center is its standout feature: an innovative Outdoor Learning Lab. The lab was made possible through the support of the PNC Foundation and the expertise of Out Teach, a nonprofit that transforms outdoor spaces into interactive classrooms. It is designed to spark curiosity and inspire young learners.

The lab features weather stations, plant beds, animal habitats, and an outdoor kitchen. These elements encourage hands-on STEM exploration and nurture a love for learning through nature.
NVFS Growing Community Through Collaboration
Last month, more than 75 volunteers from NVFS, PNC, Out Teach, and the community worked to bring the lab to life.
“The Outdoor Learning Lab constructed this week at the site of our new Early Childhood Education Center is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision. As Loudoun has grown, so too have our investments in and commitments to the community and its residents. We believe in dignity, hope, and the power of possibilities,” said Stephanie Berkowitz, president and CEO of NVFS, who is part of our 50 Most Influential list for 2024.

The groundbreaking event also drew leaders from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, and local government.
The lab’s debut coincides with the 20th anniversary of PNC’s Grow Up Great initiative, a $500 million program dedicated to preparing children for success in school and life.
The center will be located at 43323 Railstop Terr. in Ashburn starting in Spring 2025.
