This Massive, Multilevel Climbing Course Is Set to Reopen this Month

If your kids are tired of everything else, this “90-element vertical adventure” in Upton Hill Regional Park might be the focus of your afternoons once the region heats back up.

Updated March 8, 2022. Trapped in the house with a wee who’s driving you nuts? Take your child and yourself to Climb Upton, NoVA Parks’ newest concept for kids who need to blow off steam.

The “90 element vertical adventure” is welcoming back guests after a winter hiatus starting Saturday, March 12. The outdoor climbing course is safe for children as young as five—and challenging enough for their adult counterparts (weighing less than 265 pounds). The course includes steep ladders, swinging steps suspended by ropes, something that looks like a ski lift, and zip lines. The course has three levels, with easy, medium, and hard features on each—and the entire metal monstrosity sits outdoors, right next to the Ocean Dunes Waterpark.

Kids and caretakers will be strapped into harnesses and helmeted before they’re turned loose, so there should be no cause for concern if one should lose their grip on whatever they’re clinging to. It’s advised that everyone drink water before embarking on this trekking-esque escapade—and to wear close-toed shoes and comfortable clothes. The website also prohibits being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If folks should tire of climbing, Upton Hill Regional Park has options. As mentioned, there’s the Ocean Dunes Waterpark and Concessions Stand (Memorial Day to Labor Day)—there’s also an 18-Hole Deluxe Mini Golf course (March to October) and Slow and Fast Pitch Batting Cages (March to October).

With walking trails and another playground in the lower park, someone should be able to find something to do before everyone requires a nap. 6060 Wilson Blvd., Arlington
