When Memorial Day arrives, it means the summer fun can finally start. Whether the family wants to try out some rides at the carnival or cool off in the pool, these are the family-friendly activities to attend this holiday weekend.

Waterworks Opening Day 2021

Saturday, noon-6 p.m.
Memorial Day weekend is here, which means the pools are open. Memorial Day BBQ & Pool Party

Saturday, 5-8 p.m.
Ring in the holiday with a dip in the pool. Party until the sun goes down with fun lawn games, water fights, and delicious bbq staples. The menu for the evening includes St. Louis style ribs, Gold Cup mac and cheese, double chocolate brownies, and more. // Salamander Resort & Spa: 500 N. Pendleton St., Middleburg; $40 per child, $72 per adult

Cicadas Around Us!

Saturday & Sunday, times vary
If you have been outside, you’ve probably noticed or heard that the cicadas have arrived. If your kids have questions about these new insects, you may want to sign up for this activity. Ask all of your cicada questions as you learn about the bug’s life and prepare for the summer months. // Ellanor C. Lawrence Park: 5040 Walney Rd., Chantilly; Riverbend Park: 8700 Potomac Hills St., Great Falls; $8

ViVa! Vienna!

Saturday-Monday, times vary
Kick off summer with a trip to the carnival. From a trip on the ferris wheel to live music, everyone from the youngest to the oldest will have a memorable day.  // Vienna Town Green: 245 Maple Ave. W., Vienna; free admission

Mud Buggin’

Sunday, 11 a.m.-noon
Head to the tidal pond to get a close look at the animals that call it home. Take a trip with the ranger to visit the turtles, fish, and ducks. Plan for a day of muddy adventures as you try to catch some creatures along the water. // Mason Neck State Park: 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton; free
