These five local parks are some of the coolest places for kids with energy to burn.
Clemyjontri Park
This colorful park is already pretty awesome thanks to its carousel and train, but, what parents of children with special needs know, is that the designers put in extra-special care to make it accessible for all. From swings with high backs for children who need extra support to ramps that lead to elevated play areas to reading areas featuring a braille option, the goal was to ensure all children could play together in this must-visit park. // 6317 Georgetown Pike, McLean
Fantasy Playground at Lake Ridge
This Woodbridge playground is officially called the Fantasy Playground, but for parents who remember Lincoln Logs, it really looks more like those wooden building blocks come to life. The expansive space features vintage-feeling wooden structures with plenty of places to climb, crawl through and pretend to be king or queen of the castle. Fairlington Park Playground
Reopened in the spring after an extensive renovation, Fairlington Park Playground is an adventurous kid’s dream. An imposing structure features suspended tunnels made of netting for kids to climb in and up—then get back to the ground via a super-tall, enclosed slide. The family-friendly neighborhood hasn’t forgotten about little kids at the new park. A dedicated space with Astroturf hills and play equipment much closer to the ground is popular among the preschool set. // 3308 S. Stafford St., Arlington
Chessie’s Big Backyard at Lee District Family Recreation Area
Kids can run, jump, climb and slide at this popular park in Alexandria. Two areas—one for older kids and a soft rubber section for little ones still getting their footing—means everyone can play without worry. A pirate ship and lighthouse delight the younger set, while big kids have plenty of slides to choose from. The park is also accessible to all with ramps, and a carousel accommodates kids who need to transfer from a wheelchair. Plus, Chessie’s has a truly awesome sprayground. Named Our Special Harbor, the accessible mini-waterpark includes Chessie the Sea Serpent, misting sunflowers and interactive water tables. // 6601 Telegraph Road, Alexandria
Potomac Yard Park
Located in the newly named National Landing, this park—which spans a couple blocks—may one day become the preferred place for Amazon parents. Before they all move to town, take your tots here for an afternoon of summer fun—with dedicated sections for both big and little kids. Everyone can come together in the middle of the park, where an impressive 36 synchronized water fountains offer one of the region’s very best spraygrounds. // 2501 Potomac Ave., Alexandria
