A barred owl took a cue from Santa Claus this week and descended into a Northern Virginia home through the chimney, then pushed the family’s Christmas tree topper aside to make room for himself at the top.
The Animal Welfare League of Arlington, an animal shelter that also provides animal control services, received a call from a nearby home stating an owl had snuck in. When Sergeant of Animal Control Spencer Murray arrived on the scene, he found the barred owl perched on top of the Christmas tree in place of the star.
Murray was able to carefully capture the owl and release it back into the wild.
While it’s common this time of year to check your tree for critters bringing it into your home, the AWLA also reminds residents to keep your chimney capped to ensure no furry friends sneak down your flue to escape the cold.
