A Northern Virginia woman who has gained over 530,000 followers on TikTok documenting her progress building a tunnel under her suburban home has been told to halt the project.
The woman, whose name appears as Kala on her TikTok account with the handle @engineer.everything, has been documenting the process of building an underground tunnel system under her home.
One video, posted in October 2023, recaps a full year of her construction efforts. The video says she began work in November 2022 by carving into her subbasement’s walls and excavating materials and using hundreds of concrete blocks to construct a tunnel entrance. The main chamber of her tunnel system is 22 feet below ground, she says in the video.

In her most recent video, posted on December 27, she says town officials shut down the project.
“They did give me a stop order and are requiring an immediate evaluation by a professional engineer,” she said. “Fortunately, contrary to the rumors here, it is constructed entirely below the slab of my house.” She said that she will be working on getting the permits and approval necessary to continue.
A NoVA town confirmed to FOX5 that it had conducted a site inspection on December 7. “The town is working with the property owner to correct any violations and ensure that the property is safe and in compliance with the code,” FOX5 reported.
Many other social media users have expressed concern over the safety of the project both on TikTok and in a recent Reddit thread.
One video, posted on July 13, shows a fire erupting in the tunnels. She said the fire was a result of “welding steel forms.”
Kala does not have formal training as an engineer, she told NBC in an interview in November.
