For those who take Metro’s Orange and Silver lines, there is now shuttle service seven days a week as Metro works to replace its original 40-year-old steel rail between the Ballston-Marymount University and Vienna stations.
The project closes Metro stations west of Ballston and disrupt Silver Line access.
During the first phase, which runs through June 25, the East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, and Vienna stations are closed. The East Falls Church station shutdown means Metrorail riders won’t be able to hop on or off the Silver Line there.
Here’s when the free shuttle service will run, according to Metro:
Orange Line Shuttle: Operates during normal Metrorail operating hours with service between Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, and Ballston-Marymount University stations.
- Every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Every 10 minutes all other times, including weekends.
Silver Line Shuttle: Operates during normal hours between McLean, East Falls Church, and Ballston-Marymount University stations.
- Every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Every 10 minutes all other times, including weekends.
Metro also introduced a new Express bus route that runs seven days a week between Rosslyn and McLean. The Silver Line Limited Bus still takes passengers between Rosslyn, McLean, and Dulles International Airport. The service is every five minutes during rush hours and every 10 during non-rush hours.

In addition to replacing the track on the Orange Line, crews will install fiber-optic cable to modernize communications. Read more about Metro’s Orange Line project.
On the Yellow Line, Metro said ridership is up 20 percent after its eight-month closure. Trains are now arriving every eight minutes, the agency said.
