Major construction is expected to shut down Orange Line stations in Arlington and Fairfax counties for weeks this summer. Metro announced shuttle service alternatives for commuters Monday.
Metro stations west of Ballston will be closed for the work. Silver Line access will be impacted during two phases slated to take place in June and July.

The first phase will shutter the East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, and Vienna stations from June 3 to June 25.
Per Metro, free shuttle service is below.
- Orange Line Shuttle: Local service between Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, and Ballston-Marymount University stations during normal Metrorail operating hours.
- Every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Every 10 minutes all other times.
- Silver Line Shuttle: Local service between McLean, East Falls Church, and Ballston-Marymount University stations during normal Metrorail operating hours.
- Every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Every 10 minutes all other times.
- Orange Line Express: Express service between Vienna and Rosslyn stations.
- Service every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Service every 10 minutes during non-rush hours. (9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
- Silver Line Limited: Limited-stop service between Dulles International Airport, McLean, and Rosslyn.
- Service every five minutes during rush hours. (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Service every 10 minutes during non-rush hours. (9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
The second phase of the project will keep the Dunn Loring and Vienna stations closed for an extra 21 days from June 26 to July 16.
Shuttle service for that leg of the project is:
- Orange Line Shuttle: Local service between Vienna, Dunn Loring, and West Falls Church during Metrorail operating hours.
- Service every five to 10 minutes on weekdays.
- Service every 10 minutes on weekends.
The goal of the work is for Metro to replace 40-year-old steel rail between the Ballston-Marymount University and Vienna stations. “Replacing the track in this section is a top priority to ensure safety and increase reliability. Crews will also install fiber-optic cables during this shutdown,” the agency said in a news release.
The Maryland side of the Orange Line will see some work being done as well.
Trains will run on a single-track for 10 days between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly from May 12 to May 22. The goal there is to finish roofing work at the Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, and Cheverly stations that require utility company PEPCO to de-energize the power lines.
If you take the Green Line in Maryland, a stretch of that will close this summer for more than a month: There will be a 44-day shutdown from Fort Totten to Greenbelt from July 22 to Sept. 4.
