If your kids love building and designing with Legos, they’ll soon have a new local venue for their imagination-fueled play: A new Lego Discovery Center is set to open in Springfield Town Center in Summer 2023.
Officials from PREIT (the parent company of Springfield Town Center) and Merlin Entertainments will break ground on the project next week, with a ceremonial brick drop to signify the beginning of the new space.
Lego Discovery Centers are indoor play spaces that allow kids to play and explore with the quintessential childhood toy. The center will span 32,000 square feet and contain over two million bricks, with entertainment opportunities like the “Imagination Express” train ride, a 4-D cinema, and workshops to perfect your building-block craft. The target age for visitors is between 2 and 12 years old.
“We are excited to welcome this next generation LEGO® Discovery Center to Fairfax County! It is an institution for kids of all ages where they can explore their imagination,” said Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Jeff McKay in a press release. “LEGO Discovery Center will draw families from across the region to family-friendly Springfield and will be an important contribution to the County.”
The leaders of the center will also be searching for Mini Model Builders, children who will be the first to test out the new center to provide feedback. To be considered to be a Mini Model Builder, parents can submit a photo of their child (ages 4 to 12) with an original Lego build. Six winners will be chosen to participate.
The first Discovery Center opened in Brussels in July 2022, and there are now 27 centers around the world.
