A homeowner at the 11400 block of Waples Mill Rd. in Oakton fatally shot a young male intruder on Wednesday night, Fairfax County police said.

Police say the homeowner was outside on his property when he got into a dispute with another man. The homeowner went into his home and retrieved a firearm. The intruder then entered the home with a large landscaping rock.

During a confrontation, the homeowner fired his gun, police said. Authorities were called to the scene and first aid was given but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the Washington Post reported.

The homeowner’s wife, two children, and another adult were also home at the time of the incident. They were not harmed. The homeowner was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the incident is being investigated as self-defense.
