Goodwin House recently made Northern Virginia history: In late June, the not-for-profit, senior living organization, which has senior living community locations in Alexandria and Falls Church (Bailey’s Crossroads), became the first senior living community in Northern Virginia to receive gold-level certification from Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE), and is the third senior living provider in the state of Virginia to hold the certification.
SAGECare is a training program for those who work with and advocate for older adults. The training provides staff with a better understanding of LGBTQ issues and the skills needed to work with older LGBTQ adults.
The achievement was announced just on the heels of Pride Month and the landmark Supreme Court ruling protecting LGBTQ workers under the civil rights law.
Goodwin House’s participation in the SAGECare program provides staff members with training and education on how to best work with older adults in the LGBTQ community and to create an inclusive experience for all residents. As a gold-level provider, SAGECare provides training to 60% or more of Goodwin House’s staff every year.
