New From NoVA: The Latest Summer Blockbuster, a New Local Cookbook, and More

NoVA-related books and movies that caught our eyes and ears.

By Michele Kettner August 3, 2022 at 4:25 pm

While there is usually a lull as the summer days start to slip away, these NoVA creators didn’t get the memo. Whether you’re planning to return to the movie theater or need to add a hot beat to your summer playlist, these local authors, actors, and artists have the releases you should check out this August.

Music

“One Day” by Nic D

The TikTok sensation from Culpeper is making sure your summer playlist is on fire. He’ll be dropping new material throughout the season, and his latest release is definitely the kind of song that makes you want to drive around town with the windows down and the volume up.

Book

This Vicious Grace by Emily Thiede

This Central Virginian and former public school teacher is making waves on the writing scene with her debut novel. Alessa’s gift from the gods is killing suitors left and right, and the countdown is on for her to find the right partner and stop the swarm of demons destroying her home.

Movie

Bullet Train

Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, and Arlington’s own Sandra Bullock, this movie screams summer blockbuster. Hitting theaters on Aug. 5, the Kotaro Isaka book-turned-movie follows an unlucky assassin as he tries to reenter the field with an easy mission. But little does he know that four other lethal adversaries on the same train have similar, yet conflicting, objectives.

Book

The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook by Brian Noyes

For those who can’t make it out to Marshall easily, you’re in luck because your favorite NoVA bakery is coming out with a cookbook. Hot off the press, this collection of savory and sweet recipes (think Virginia peanut pie and corn crab cakes) from chef Noyes is sure to fill your table the rest of the year.
