The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting death of a 15-year-old. The juvenile died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while interacting with a LCSO deputy.

The incident occurred Monday morning in the 36000 block of East Loudoun Street in Round Hill. The Purcellville Police Department had requested LCSO assist in locating a missing and endangered 15-year-old male. He was believed to be in possession of multiple firearms.

His parents told Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman that “guns were missing from the house and that they were worried about their son,” Chapman said in a press conference following the incident.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., an LCSO deputy located the juvenile walking westbound alongside East Loudoun Street. LCSO says that as the deputy approached, the juvenile produced a firearm and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As the juvenile fired a round, the deputy then discharged one round from his service weapon. Chapman said that the deputy “fired a shot, but we don’t believe that had anything to do with the cause of death.” When asked if the deputy’s gunshot hit the victim, Chapman said, “We’re still waiting to hear.”
