Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation has announced a new master plan for the upcoming Mayo River State Park. The 637-acre park is planned for Henry County.
The land is situated adjacent to North Carolina’s Mayo River State Park, along the North and South Mayo Rivers. Under the new master plan, it will be developed in phases over the next 30 years.
“The master plan for Virginia’s future Mayo River State Park reflects our commitment to conservation of natural resources, thoughtful recreation planning and strong community engagement,” said DCR director Nikki Rovner. “This park will provide exceptional opportunities to experience the Mayo River corridor while protecting one of Virginia’s most scenic and culturally rich landscapes.”
The plan includes a new visitor center and day-use facilities like picnic areas, a playground, and trailheads. Cabins and tent-camping sites with a bathhouse will be available for overnight visitors.
An expanded trail network with additional hiking and mountain biking trails will connect to North Carolina’s Mayo River State Park.
DCR says the plan “emphasizes conservation of rare ecosystems, forests and river corridors, along with the protection of historically significant sites such as Byrd’s Ledge.”Park. There will also be canoe and kayak put-ins, a fishing pier, and a pedestrian bridge planned for a later phase.
