Mark Warner Says His Next Senate Term Would Be His Last

The Virginia Democrat has held his seat since 2009.

By Maggie Roth July 23, 2026 at 10:50 am

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner said that, if he’s reelected in November, this upcoming term would be his last, Daily Press reported.

Warner said that he believes it was time to bring younger people into office. The senator is 71 and would be 78 at the end of the next term. But, he said, “I sure as hell was not going to quit while Donald Trump was sitting down the street.”

Warner, a Democrat, first took office in 2009 after serving as Virginia’s governor from 2002 to 2006. He’s currently running for his fourth Senate term.

As the only Democrat to qualify for the ballot, he will face the winner of the Republican primary in the general election on November 3.

An Alexandria resident, Warner serves as vice chair of the Select Committee on Intelligence. He’s also a member of the Senate Finance; Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs; Budget; and Rules & Administration committees.

He was also named to our list of the 50 Most Influential People in Northern Virginia.
