As if a day at the beach isn’t quite enough, Ocean City, Maryland, has added something else: three days of world-class rock ’n roll right on the sand. That’s Oceans Calling Festival, now in its fourth year, which returned for the last weekend in September with massive crowds and unforgettable performances.
The festival was the brainchild of O.A.R. frontman Marc Roberge, who pitched the idea in 2020. Produced by C3 Presents, it has quickly become a marquee East Coast event, drawing 162,000 fans this year — about 54,000 per day. While Hurricane Ian forced the cancellation of the 2022 edition, the festival has thrived in 2023 and 2024, firmly cementing itself as a must-attend music destination. In all, 43 bands performed across the three days.
Headliners Green Day, Noah Kahan, and Fall Out Boy delivered high-octane sets, but the lineup’s depth was just as impressive. Franz Ferdinand’s electrifying stage presence had the crowd jumping from the first chord, while rising star Izzy Escobar opened the festival with powerhouse vocals. Devo proved that even into their 70s, they can still command a stage. Nelly turned the beach into a giant sing-along, and The Black Crowes reminded everyone of their staying power with Chris Robinson’s unmistakable swagger. My personal highlight was finally catching Train — engaging, joyful, and worth the wait.
Day one was hot and sticky, day two saw sideways rain that drenched fans and photographers alike, and day three brought perfect sunshine and a stunning beachside sunset. No matter the conditions, the crowd never lost energy — dancing, splashing in puddles, and singing along.
Beyond the music, Oceans Calling had friendly security, efficient shuttles, and Ocean City’s boardwalk businesses open inside the festival grounds. Fans could grab a forgotten item, shop for souvenirs, sit down for a proper meal at Harrison’s Harbor Watch — or take in the ocean air with a drink at its outdoor bar and grill, The Wedge.
Oceans Calling is a rare blend of sand, sea, and sound. The 2026 festival hasn’t been announced yet but watch for that to come out early next year.
