4 Northern Virginia Spots to Catch Bluegrass Music

Enjoy some banjo picking, guitar strumming, fiddle flaying, and high-lonesome harmonies at these venues.

For a remarkably long time, bluegrass and country were among the dominant live music offerings in the NoVA area. And while live bluegrass music might not be as easy to find these days, several venues still support a devoted following. We’ve rounded up four options.

Barns of Rose Hill

The repurposed dairy barns in Berryville make an ideal setting for string band and mountain music. Converted into a cultural arts center in 2011, the Barns of Rose Hill books a wide array of genres. The venue also hosts arts and crafts exhibits and offers open acoustic jams for pickers of all ages and skill levels. The Grammy nominated quartet Special Consensus plays as part of the 2025 Bluegrass & BBQ series on Saturday, April 5. Barns of Rose Hill, 95 Chalmers Ct., Berryville

The Birchmere

The Seldom Scene has been playing in various configurations for 54 years. Some say the band is single-handedly responsible for keeping the bluegrass genre alive in the region in the ’70s and ’80s with its long residency at The Birchmere. The quintet has four Best Bluegrass Album Grammy nominations to its credit, and released a new album, Remains to Be Scene, on March 14. They will celebrate the new album with a performance at The Birchmere on April 13. 3710 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria

JV’s Restaurant

Over the decades, country, roots, and bluegrass notables such as Patsy Cline, Roy Clark, the Country Gentlemen, and the Seldom Scene have graced the stage at this snug 77-year-old music institution. With live music every night, acoustic string bands pop up with regularity. A Bluegrass Jam with Andy happens the second Wednesday of each month. 6666 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church

Lucketts Bluegrass, Lucketts Community Center

The historic village north of Leesburg has been a bluegrass hotbed for decades, hosting one of the longest-running concert series in the country. Originally staged in the Old Schoolhouse (starting in 1913!), concerts these days are played in the community center and feature national as well as local acts. On March 29, look for Australian Kristy Cox and Grasstime to bring an Oz-accent to the bluegrass tunes. 42361 Lucketts Rd., Leesburg
