A federal jury has convicted Everett Chad Nelson, 44, for assaulting a fellow passenger on his flight from San Francisco to Dulles International Airport.
On October 28, Nelson approached a deaf passenger who was sleeping more than 20 rows ahead of his seat on United Airlines Flight 2247. Without provocation, he began “brutally punching the passenger in the face,” according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
He punched the victim “repeatedly and rapidly,” using both hands to strike him on the cheeks, nose, and forehead.
“Nelson caused serious bodily injury to the victim, breaking his nose and leaving the victim with injuries that have required months of medical treatment,” the news release said.
A fellow passenger, sitting a few rows ahead, restrained Nelson when he saw the altercation. The flight crew relocated and secured Nelson for the rest of the flight. The FBI arrested him upon arrival at Dulles.
Nelson was convicted of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault by striking, beating, or wounding, DC News Now reported. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
