Jury Finds ‘Shopping Cart Killer’ Guilty of Murder; Recommends 4 Life Sentences

Jurors in Harrisonburg found Anthony Robinson guilty of the murders of Beth Redmon and Tonita Smith.

A jury has found Anthony Eugene Robinson, dubbed the “shopping cart killer,” guilty of killing two women in Harrisonburg in 2021. The jury recommended four life sentences, 10 years in prison, and $400,000 in fines, WTOP reported.

Robinson was on trial this week at Rockingham County Circuit Court for the murders of Beth Redmon and Tonita Smith. He is also suspected — but has not yet been charged — in the murders of Sonya Champ, Cheyenne Brown, and Stephanie Harrison.

Jurors deliberated for only 30 minutes, according to WTOP. The jury convicted Robinson of two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of first-degree murder, and two counts of concealing a dead body.

During the four-day trial, jurors saw evidence including videos of Robinson entering a hotel room with Redmon and Smith on two separate evenings. Both times, he left the next morning with a shopping cart covered in a sheet.

Prosecutors also presented photos of Champ’s body in a shopping cart. A forensic scientist testified that Robinson’s DNA was found on Champ’s body and the shopping cart.

Judge Bruce Albertson will announce Robinson’s final sentence on September 17.
