Derrick Ward, a longtime reporter with NBC Washington News4, died Tuesday following complications from a recent cardiac arrest, the news station announced today. He was 62.
“As a distinguished journalist, Derrick’s storytelling, prolific writing, warmth, and humor touched countless lives. Our children and our entire family will miss him dearly,” a statement from Ward’s family said.
Ward grew up in Marshall Heights and the H Street Corridor in Washington, DC, and graduated from HD Woodson High School and the University of Maryland.
He began his career in radio, working for WPFW, WAMU, and WTOP. His coverage included major stories such as the September 11 attack on the Pentagon, the Iran-Contra hearings, and the Washington-area sniper shootings.
He joined News4 in 2006, following a television role with WKBW-TV in Buffalo.
“Ward had a way with words and music. He shined when he had a pen, a microphone — or a guitar — in his hands,” a post from NBC Washington said.
Ward is survived by three children: Derrick Jr., Ian, and Marisa.
“We ask for your thoughts and prayers during this time, and we extend our gratitude to everyone for the outpouring of love and support. Details regarding his memorial service will be shared in the coming days,” the statement from his family said.
