The deadly shooting happened as the two men worked out.

By Colleen Kelleher August 21, 2024 at 12:27 pm

Fairfax County police arrested a Chantilly man wanted for a deadly shooting at Gold’s Gym in Reston on Tuesday afternoon. Police arrested Steve Taehee Ha, 43, of Chantilly, on Tuesday night.

Police charged Ha with second-degree murder in the death of Hyung Joon Choi, 31, of Reston. He is being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

The shooting just after 1 p.m. at the gym at 11830 Sunrise Valley Dr. occurred as both men worked out. Police called the shooting an isolated and targeted incident.

“Our suspect approached our victim in a targeted stance and shot him,” Capt. Kent Bailey, commander of the public affairs bureau of the Fairfax County Police Department, said during a Tuesday briefing.

It is not known why Choi was shot in the upper body. Police said Choi went to the hospital in life-threatening condition, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing. Police ask anyone with information to call the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2. You can report tips anonymously through Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS or through the Crime Solvers website.
