Summer brings many opportunities for fun, romantic dates around the waterfronts of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. It’s easy to set the scene for a rom-com-worthy date night when you can see the serene scenes of the Potomac River or one of NoVA’s many lakes in the background. Here are some ideas for fun, romantic waterfront dates in the region.
For the Foodies
There are lots of options in NoVA for a romantic dinner set on a waterfront backdrop. For views of the Potomac from Alexandria, try Barca Pier and Wine Bar for Spanish and Mediterranean tapas or Vola’s Dockside Grill for fresh seafood and specialty cocktails. Or, head to Reston for a meal on the patio at Red’s Table, where you’ll find American cuisine and serene views of Lake Thoreau.
For the Young at Heart
Have some lighthearted fun with a trip to The Wharf. The pop-up mini golf experience Pixar Putt is here for the summer, and it offers adults-only hours every Friday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m. After a round of putt-putt, make your way to Boardwalk Bar & Arcade for a drink, a bite, and even more games, or go to the dockside bar Cantina Bambina for stunning views of the river.
For the Sightseers
Breathe in the fresh air and take in the sights with a trip along the Mount Vernon Trail. The 18-mile paved trail runs from Theodore Roosevelt Island to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, offering unparalleled views of the DC skyline across the Potomac. Take a stroll along the path with your date, or hop on bikes from Pedego Electric Bikes or Unlimited Biking, both in Alexandria, for a more adventurous outing.
For Art Lovers
Bond over a shared love of the arts with a trip to the Torpedo Factory, just steps from Alexandria’s waterfront, where you’ll see more than 70 artists’ studios. When you’ve seen the art, step outside for a sunset stroll along the water — you may even find other works of public art in the area to keep the conversation going.
For the Outdoorsy
If adventure in the great outdoors is more your style, hit the water with a boating trip on Lake Fairfax. Hop in your choice of single or tandem kayaks or a two-person pedal boat to glide across the water on the serene lake. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the park once your journey across the water is complete. For other kayak date options, here are six more options for you.
