The Portside in Old Town Summer Festival has been canceled due to concerns regarding the extreme heat forecasted for this weekend. This popular annual festival on Alexandria’s waterfront was originally scheduled for Saturday, June 22.
There are not currently plans to reschedule the event, according to Visit Alexandria.
“After consulting with meteorologists and emergency services experts, Visit Alexandria has made the decision to cancel the Portside in Old Town Summer Festival on Saturday, June 22, 2024, due to the heat emergency,” an emailed announcement from Visit Alexandria read.
“With the heat index predicted to exceed 100 degrees, we made this difficult decision for everyone’s safety,” Visit Alexandria said in a Facebook post.
Saturday’s weather forecast is considered an “extreme heat risk rating,” according to the National Weather Service.
The ALX Jazz Fest @ Portside will still happen as scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 21. There will be heat mitigation measures, including a cooling bus, water available to food vendors, and medical professionals on location.
