First-term Alexandria City Council member Alyia Gaskins defeated Alexandria Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and retired real estate developer Steven Peterson in Alexandria’s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday.
Gaskins, 35, effectively becomes Alexandria’s mayor-elect since she has no Republican opposition in November. She will be the first Black woman to be mayor.
“She will make a great mayor for all Alexandrians and move our city forward,” current Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said on Facebook.
With 97 percent of the votes in, Gaskins secured 60 percent of the vote, while 30 percent went to Jackson and just under 11 percent to Peterson.
Four Alexandria City Council incumbents — Canek Aguirre, Sarah Bagley, John Taylor Chapman, and R. Kirk McPike — won the Democratic primary, along with newcomers Abel Elnoubi and Jacinta Greene.
The election results remain unofficial until formally certified.
