Loudoun County Schools Scrap Plan for Delayed Openings to Accommodate Teacher Training

Feedback showed that the schedule change would be difficult for some families.

By Colleen Kelleher May 20, 2024 at 10:06 am

Loudoun County’s school system abandoned a plan to have students go in two hours late 16 days in the next school year to allow for required teacher training.

“After carefully reviewing the feedback and recognizing that the adjusted arrival schedule is not an ideal option for the majority of the families we heard from, we are reconsidering our approach,” said Superintendent Aaron Spence in a letter to families and staff.

The letter also said: “We are currently exploring alternative options that will allow us to meet the VDOE requirements while minimizing impact on families. Our goal is to find a solution that balances the need for increased PD time with the practical needs of our community. We are committed to ensuring our educators receive the training they need to enhance their teaching practices and align with state standards, ultimately benefiting our students.”

The school board will be presented with alternatives at its May 28 meeting.

The extra training is needed because there are changes in next year’s Standards of Learning math and English tests and because of requirements in the Virginia Literacy Act. Teachers who teach kindergarten through eighth grade must complete up to 27 hours of required training.
