Watch Parties Bring the Kentucky Derby to NoVA

This is the occasion that calls for a mint julep.

By Maggie Roth May 3, 2024 at 8:57 am

The 150th Kentucky Derby kicks off on Saturday, May 4, in Louisville, Kentucky. That’s a long way from Northern Virginia, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have the Derby Day experience. At these watch parties and derby events, you can sip mint juleps, don your fanciest hat, and watch the race — without spending money on airfare.

Bourn ‘n Derb at Aslin Beer Co.

May 4, 2–8 p.m.

At all of Aslin’s locations, guests to this derby day celebration can try their hand at horse racing — toy horse racing, that is. There will be races for kids and adults, plus a fancy hat contest, bourbon flights, and cocktail specials. Multiple locations

Derby Day at Wren

May 4, 4 p.m.

For an event that rises to the occasion, head to Wren. Tickets to the shindig include derby-inspired stationery, passes hors d’oeuvres, three drinks, and live music — plus TVs to see the race, of course. There will be Maker’s Mark mint juleps and other specialty cocktails. There will be contests for the best hat and best dressed, with prizes from Maker’s Mark. 1825 Capital One Dr. S., Tysons, $75

Kentucky Derby Viewing Party at Casanel Vineyards & Winery

May 4, 4:30–7 p.m.

If you favor wine over bourbon, Casanel in Leesburg is the place to be on Derby Day. Wear your best fascinator and relax to watch the race. The tasting room will have extended hours until 7 p.m. Lady K’s food truck will be onsite serving buttermilk fried chicken and sides starting at 3 p.m. 17952 & 17956 Canby Rd., Leesburg

Derby Day at King & Rye

May 4, 5–8 p.m.

King & Rye’s Southern-inspired menu is the ideal complement to mint juleps and Kentucky bourbon. Plus, submit a photo in your best derby hat or fascinator by tagging the restaurant on Instagram or Facebook to enter the hat contest. The winner will receive a $75 gift card. 480 King St., Alexandria

Derby de Mayo at Banditos Tacos & Tequila

May 4

The Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo collide at this Fairfax taqueria. All 14 restaurant TVs will play the race, and anyone wearing a derby hat gets a 10 percent discount. Mint juleps are available for $10. There’s a special shooter on the menu called the Sun Shooter. 16021 Braddock Rd., Fairfax
