With ridership of 327,285, Amtrak’s Alexandria station had the second most passengers among Amtrak’s Southeast stations in 2023, coming in right behind Richmond.
The other three top stations in the Southeast were Charlotte, North Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and Raleigh, North Carolina.
Richmond had ridership of 424,617 and Norfolk, 232,530.
“Richmond is not just the capital of Virginia, it’s the epicenter of the East, connecting the Southeast and the Northeast by rail,” said DJ Stadtler, executive director of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, which oversees the Commonwealth’s Amtrak Virginia service.
“All three of these stations — Richmond-Staples Mill, Alexandria, and Norfolk — offer Virginians access to rail service connecting the Commonwealth with the rest of the East Coast.”
Passengers taking Amtrak out of Alexandria can go to DC, New York, and Boston. There is additional service to Indianapolis; Chicago; New Orleans; Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; and Miami.
Trains out of Richmond offer 12 daily rides to DC, Baltimore, New York, and Boston, with additional Amtrak service to North Carolina’s Raleigh and Charlotte and Georgia’s Savannah.
Amtrak Virginia, which also serves 13 other Virginia communities, set a ridership record of more than 1.3 million passengers in 2023. Amtrak said that makes the state one of the “most popular travel destinations on the Amtrak national network.”
