Amazon Now Arlington’s Top Private Employer

The federal government continues to be the top overall employer in Arlington, followed by the county government and school system combined.

Amazon is now Arlington’s top private employer, according to Arlington’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for fiscal year 2023.

The federal government remains the No. 1 employer, followed by the Arlington County government and schools.

Amazon, which opened its HQ2 site with 8,000 employees earlier this year, comes in next, ahead of accounting company Deloitte and tech firm Accenture. In 2022, Accenture held the No. 3 spot and Deloitte, No. 4, behind the government and schools.

Rounding out the top 10 employers are Virginia Hospital Center (No. 6), Lidl (No. 7), BNA Bloomberg (No 8), Nestlé (No. 9), and Booz Allen Hamilton (No. 10).

Back in 2014, Arlington’s top five employers were the Department of Defense, Arlington County government and schools, the Department of Homeland Security, Deloitte, and the Department of Justice.

“Arlington is home to an estimated 214,600 jobs, as of January 1, 2023. The service sector comprises a significant share of jobs in Arlington. About 27.6 percent of all jobs are in the professional and technical services sector. Another 21.3 percent of jobs are in other service sectors, including administrative, education, and health. The government sector also continues to comprise a large share of Arlington jobs. About 20.8 percent of the County’s January 2023 employment is estimated to be in government,” the report said.

The 323-page report, which came out in mid-December, spells out the county’s financial position in great detail from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023.
